What is a laminar flow, you ask? Well basically, laminar flow hoods or cabinet is essentially an enclosed workstation that utilizes filters to catch particles that may enter the cabinet, so that the working environment is free of any possible contaminations. These cabinets are made with the intention to protect the product or work from any elements and are most useful for plate pouring. It is not to be confused with a biosafety cabinet. One difference between biosafety cabinets and laminar flow cabinets are that the biosafety cabinet will protect both the product and the user, whereas the laminar flow cabinet usually protects just the sample, as the effluent air will be blown into the user’s face. What Are The Components Of A Laminar Flow?
 

  • Working Station 

There is a flat working station that users can utilize to create their products. The work station is made of stainless steel to prevent rusting. There are loops, burners and culture plates installed on the workstation.  

  • Cabinet 

The cabinet surrounds the working station, and is made up of stainless steel with little to no gaps and joints so that spores do not accumulate. It acts as an insulator and protects the internal environment that is created by the laminar flow from the external environment. A glass shield covers the front of the cabinet that will either open completely or has hand openings. 

  • Filter Pad
    The air will enter the cabinet through the filter pad which is located at the top of the cabinet. It acts as a prevention method for dust particles and microbes from entering the working environment inside the cabinet.
  • Fan
    A fan is located beneath the filter pad, in which it sucks air in and moves the air around the cabinet. The fan will also direct air towards the filter, so that remaining microbes will get trapped while they pass through the filter. 
  • Fluorescent Lamp
    Installed in the cabinet to provide users with sufficient lighting during operation.
  • UV Lamp
    In some laminar flow hoods, there will be a UV germicidal lamp that can sterilize the interior of the cabinet and contents of it prior to the operation. To avoid any UV exposure to the user’s skin, the UV lamp in the hood should only be switched on 15 minutes prior to the procedure.

You may not know this but laminar flow hoods are used in various different industries. There are also different types of laminar flow hoods, like the vertical or horizontal flow hoods. Both of them are placed and utilized differently from one another depending on the procedures and operations that will be done at the workstation.

It is important to keep a clean and hygienic environment especially in areas that are closely related to scientific research, because it can tamper with results and such. Therefore having a laminar flow hood is helpful in those areas.
